RFID is ON!

The gates are in, the self-checks have been converted, and we're using the new pads at check-out... It's official: RFID is ON!

So how will it affect you, as a library volunteer and patron?

As a volunteer:

• Technical Services volunteers are applying RFID tags to new materials, and deletion processes have changed too.
• Circulation staff and volunteers are checking incoming tasket materials for tags.
• ILL materials are getting checked out with tags, too!
• We're shelving DVDs, except for Blu-Rays, without Kwik cases (those plastic security cases). That's starting to make more room on the shelves.

As a patron:

• New self-checks allow you to check out multiple items at the same time. No more lining up barcodes or waiting for that thumping noise that means your item has been checked out!
• You can pay library fines/fees directly by debit or credit card at the self-checks.
• Better security means fewer false alarms on checked-out materials.
• There's no change to your library card or library records.

If you have questions about the new technology, how to check out your library materials, or how this affects your volunteer work, please ask any staff person. This is new for us too, and we've been exceedingly grateful for your flexibility, attention to detail, and patience as we figure all of this out!
