Four ways to volunteer: something old/something new!

We have some exciting and fun volunteer opportunities coming up at the Library as summer approaches. If you're looking for a change of pace, or a meatier volunteer role, take a look below.

Expanded Summer Reading/School Outreach

This spring we're kicking off a new initiative at two local elementary schools to get kids geared up for summer reading before school gets out. We'll be talking with second graders about reading and registering them directly for the summer reading program. They'll also be taking field trips to the Library, and we'll have some special events just for those schools to bring them in over the summer. If you like working with kids, have some time on weekdays in the next month or two, and want to get in on the ground floor of a new program, I'd love to talk to you! 

Summer Reading at the Library

Summer Reading starts June 1 at both locations, and we have a full schedule of superhero-themed activities and presentations. We're looking for volunteers to register kids and teens in the children's areas of the Library, and also help with all of the events and programs. Scheduling is flexible, and shifts are available throughout the week. Training is just 1 hour for current volunteers, and will happen in late May/early June. Tech Help

We're trying to expand the volunteer tech help we offer to Library patrons by moving from drop-in hours to scheduling interested patrons for one-on-one appointments with volunteers. To do that, we'll be matching patron requests with volunteers who have experience in that area of technology (whether it's a new iPad, eBook help, or spreadsheets). Step one is collecting information from all of you tech-savvy or semi-tech-savvy volunteers who would be willing to occasionally help patrons with a 30-45 minute appointment to work on their tech questions. Lincoln St. Elementary Book Fair

I try not to cross-recruit too much--there are so many good causes, and you are some very busy people--but since this seemed so related to what so many of you are passionate about, I thought I'd mention it: Lincoln Street Elementary, in downtown Hillsboro, is having its Scholastic Book Fair May 4-8. They're looking for volunteers to help kids make their selections and run the cash register. If that sounds like fun to you, contact Meredith Berry at the school.
