January updates and dates

Volunteer hours from 2014 are all caught up and double-checked. If you would like a report of your volunteer hours from 2014, please email me! I can email it to you as a PDF or leave a copy in your mailbox.

The Library (both locations) will be closed all day on Monday, January 19, for MLK Day. We'll be hosting a family-friendly volunteer project that day for the national MLK Weekend of Service, so if you see cars in the parking lot, that's whats up!

Please remember to have your name badge ready to show when you come to volunteer at the Main Library. All staff and volunteers need to wear badges while on duty, and if the person who answers the door doesn't recognize you, s/he may ask to see your name badge before you come in. It's a basic security procedure. Please don't be offended--there are lots of staff and lots of volunteers, and it's hard for everyone to know everyone else!

We're collecting donated board books and picture books for Project Homeless Connect this month. The books will be given to families who attend the event. If you would like to donate new or gently used books, there's a bin in the break room at the Main Library. It's a great outreach opportunity for the Library, and a wonderful way to help make young readers.

The Winter Reading party for winter reading finishers, will be on Saturday, January 31, at 6pm. It's a teddy bear theme this year, and we're looking for a handful of volunteers to staff the teddy bear fair and work with our 0-9 year old readers. We'll need you from 5:45-8:30pm. If you're interested please let me know by January 16, or talk with Bernie Gies in Youth Services after that.

And don't forget about the Book Bowl! Library staff and volunteers are competing against the rest of the City to be the first to read 2015 books in 2015. Just email the title and author of any book you finish this year to hillsbororeads@hillsboro-oregon.gov, along with your name and department (Library!). It's the Library versus everyone else combined, so we're wildly outnumbered but we know we have the best readers around! Questions? Email me!

I will be out of the office January 21-February 2, returning on the 3rd. If you have any pressing concerns or questions, please check in with me by Friday, January 16. And, of course, you can always grab any staff member for questions while I'm gone!
