Happy May! There's a lot going on at the Library right now. A lot! This is an absurdly long list, just to keep everyone aware of what's coming up, and if you'd like more information on any of it, please let me know.
- Moving. Collections and shelving are moving at Main. The Main Library is opening late, at 3pm on weekdays, now through May 10. The second floor will not be open to the public until some time after the 20th, so staff will retrieve items that have already been moved if patrons request them. Take a few minutes to get your bearings when you come in--it's changing each day!
- Last Day at Shute Park. Shute Park's last day before renovations is Saturday, May 11. After that, the branch will be closed until March 2013.
- Storytimes at the SHARC. While Shute Park is closed, staff will offer storytimes at the Aquatic Center across the street, beginning May 14. Check out the schedule on the Library calendar.
- Shute Park's collection moves to Main. After Shute Park's last day, we'll move all the books and other materials to Main and integrate them into the collection. This will be done by staff and volunteers. If you're trained as a shelver and can spare a couple of extra hours to help with this project, let me know! We'll be starting as soon as May 15.
- Summer Reading starts. The Summer Reading Program for kids, teens, and adults begins June 1. We're expecting an onslaught of kids. If you'd like to help get them registered, we're training volunteers starting May 28. Let me know if you're interested.
- City-wide Volunteer Celebration at Jackson Bottom Wetland. June 1, 10:30am-2:30pm. Join your fellow volunteers from across Hillsboro for activities, free tours, hiking, and food at the Wetland. Invitations coming next week!
- Grand Opening. Sunday, June 2, 12-6pm. We'll have music, snacks, and activities for kids to celebrate the expansion of the Library. We'd like to have some volunteers help greet visitors, serve food, and answer questions, so save the date!
- Automated Materials Handling Installation. On June 3, we will begin installation of an Automated Materials Handling system at Main. This will automate many of our check-in and sorting tasks, and change some of the ways we do things in Circulation. Please stay alert for more information.
- Interim services in the Shute Park neighborhood. Beginning June 4, we will offer Bookmobile services near the Hillsboro Senior Center, and an interim computer lab at the downtown Police Station.
- Library volunteer party. Last year we promised a volunteer celebration in a whole new space, and on Monday, June 17, we will deliver! Save the date, and I'll have an invitation out to you in a few weeks. We'll have food, prizes, and a beautiful view!
